Our August Dessert of the Month business offers a unique take on the traditional marshmallow. Squish Marshmallows is producing marshmallows of magnificent magnitude. Their small batch, hand cut marshmallows are made with unique flavors, fulfilling every palate from childhood favorite combinations, to sophisticated, grown-up confections. Oh, and of course, lots and lots of love. 

The goal of Squish Marshmallows is to make a quality, delicious product, using natural ingredients in the marshmallow base, that makes people happy and changes the way they view the humble marshmallow. Our August business offers a unique take on the traditional, gooey marshmallow. Meet Katherine, founder of Squish Marshmallow.

What is the origin story of Squish Marshmallow?

I started Squish Marshmallows after making homemade marshmallows for a just-for-fun blog I was writing. After making them, I started thinking about different flavors, and textures, I could incorporate to make a marshmallow like I've never had before! I shared the results with some family and friends, and decided to try to launch it as a business. I don't have a culinary or business background, but always had an entrepreneurial spirit and love for sweets, so that made it an easy push to start the journey! It's been a crazy ride, but I have no regrets. 

Tell us the most rewarding part about owning a business? Where do you believe you get your entrepreneurial spirit from?

The most rewarding part is knowing that you're steering the ship, and you're the one who has to be your motivator and driving force to get your results. Of course you need help along the way, but if you're not conducting, nothing's going to get done. I think my spirit comes from my parents. They have their own business, and had to hustle super hard to get where they are, so they understand the journey. They've also been my top supporters, no matter what work or path I've taken, and knowing they're in my corner has been incredible. 

What is your process of creating new flavors?

I like categories. I've had the same signature 5 flavors since the very beginning, but, you always need to have some seasonal offerings, or a flavor of the month, or something to keep things interesting, and your current customers engaged. I like the idea of the number 3, so, I try to think of an overall category or collection for the seasonal flavors, and what fits and makes sense within that. Right now, it's summer, so my category is The Ice Cream Truck Collection. Then, I like to have a range of offerings that are accessible to different preferences, something that's both gluten free and dairy free, something more chocolatey, something more fruity, just so there's a range for each palate.   

What is your favorite recipe using Squish Marshmallows?

I love a good classic s'more! But, of course, these marshmallows are flavored, so that gives it an elevated experience!  

Do you have any advice for others out there who are interested in starting a 'sweet' business?

You don't know until you try! I think having a way for different people to try your product and offer honest and constructive feedback helps, but at the end of the day, you have to trust your gut or instincts, and try. Start small. Don't have an idea and then try to open a shop. Test the idea first, without all that overhead, and work your way up. Slow and steady!
